For the first time ever woman will represent Canada at the junior level internationally. The Junior Team Canada U20 program will be sending 20 players along with coaching staff to Nitra, Slovakia in June 2018 to compete in the World Junior Championship.
The Junior Team Canada staff held its first ever selection camp in Bradford, Ontario on December 16, inviting 45 woman to tryout for the team. The day was full of practices, scrimmages and information surrounding the tournament and the exciting buzz around the area could be felt by everyone there. The day started off with a nervous group of girls arriving at the rink with some uncertainty of what the day would bring, but it did not take long before practice began and their skill became evident. As the day progressed, the level of talent kicked up a notch and the competition was tight making it challenging for the coaching staff. Come the end of the camp emerged a very talented group of elite woman ready to take on Nitra in June.
The WJC tournament will provide the girls with their first opportunity to play a sport they have come to love, internationally. Playing at this high level, elite ball hockey competition will serve the girls with a good foundation in their individual growth and development, as well as, an opportunity to develop and grow woman in sport. The players were selected based on, not only, their high caliber of skill, but also for their character and personality to represent Canada.
The goal for this tournament is to not only bring woman to the forefront of ball hockey on an international stage and win gold, but to also create a team that will set the bar for all future teams in women's ball hockey. We expect a high level of competitiveness, sportsmanship, and team comradery from each of the players and are hoping to create an experience of a lifetime for each and every one of them. As these girls grow up and move onto their careers and lives have it will not only be the medal they will remember and tell stories about, but also the opportunity to be a part of the first ever U20 Women's Canadian Ball Hockey team and the experience of traveling to Nitra, Slovakia during the trip of a lifetime.
